Dr Morrey was educated in Melbourne, Victoria. He undertook an honours degree in science at the University of Melbourne graduating with 1st class honours in 1986. In 1987 he moved to Queensland to study medicine at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1991. He then commenced specialist training on the orthopaedic program within Queensland obtaining a fellowship in orthopaedic surgery from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2000. Further specialist training was then undertaken in Bristol, UK and Lecco, Italy in 2001 in pelvic and acetabular trauma and reconstruction, primary and revision joint replacement, spinal surgery and acute sports injury.
Dr Morrey currently holds an elected position on the Australian Orthopaedic Association Board and is currently the Chairman of the Specialist Orthopaedics Clinical Advisory Group to the Federal Health Department. He is also an examiner for the Royal Australian College of Surgeons for the Orthopaedic Specialists final exams. He is a past Chairman of the AO Trauma Asia Pacific Board and Vice Chairman of the AO Trauma International Board.
Dr Morrey is also on the editorial board of the World Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery. He also acts as a reviewer for the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Surgery. Dr Morrey is an Associate Professor at the School of Medicine and Dentistry at James Cook University and also holds the position as Chairman Australian Orthopaedic Association Rural Surgeons Committee.
Dr Morrey is a general orthopaedic surgeon with special interests in acute trauma, including acute sports injury, post-traumatic limb reconstruction, pelvic and acetabular surgery, hip and knee arthroplasty, including primary and revision surgery, as well as spinal surgery.
Dr Morrey has previously held the position of Director of the Orthopaedic Department at the Cairns Hospital and continues to attend the Cairns Hospital as a visiting medical officer, actively participating in the training of orthopaedic registrars. The majority of his private practice surgery is conducted at the Cairns Private Hospital.
Dr Morrey is actively involved with AFL Cairns and the Cairns Basketball and Cairns Taipans organisations.
